China as told by a Ginger Part 1

Today has been an extraordinarily bad day.  I want to take this time I have to share with you my time in China.  I will start at the very beginning.  I'm warning you now this is going to be a long read.

I was only able to go to China because of what I thought at the time was a miracle scholarship I was awarded during the summer.  Prior to that I was accepted into the program, but I had no way to actually pay for my plane ticket and visa.  So I got the scholarship, bought my ticket, bought some luggage and went to China August 8, 2012.  I came a month before school started here and went to Changsha to spend the month with my girlfriend.  Things were not so bad in Changsha besides the fact that the room I was renting didn't have internet and I was forced to use my iPhone to do anything internet related.  I ate lots of interesting foods and had an alright time.  My girlfriend and I had a bit of a falling out when I first came to China.  We seemed to disagree a lot.  We were in her hometown so her opinion on things were quite high.  She generally seemed very disappointed in me since I complained about her city a lot, but eventually that all changed.  I would like to add that my birthday is August 11th so I came on the 8th so that I could spend my birthday with her.  At the time she was interning at a bank in Changsha so I was only able to see her during lunch time, because well her parents didn't know I existed so she couldn't come after work.  So I spent an entire month just waiting for lunch time to come so that we could spend time together.  Eventually the month came to an end and I had to leave Changsha to go to school, she also had to go back to her school which was not in Changsha.
If I would have stayed in America and took summer classes last summer instead of preparing for China I could have graduated last December, but instead I wanted to spend this time with my girlfriend to see if she was "the one".  Anyway school started in China, I was only there taking Chinese classes which started every morning at 8 am.  A few days after arriving I was told to go to the office because there was something urgent they wanted to ask me.  Turns out the urgent question was just them needing an English teacher.  They told me it paid 140RMB a hour and that it was 4 hours a week.  I accepted since I only saw it as extra money.  I have no true prior teaching experience.  I was a TA back in America for Database Systems, but that is a subject I know also I wasn't the teacher, I was only the helper.  Teaching wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but in the end I grew tired of trying.  They gave me Class B, which are the students who did bad on their preliminary test and were put into the lower class, but the book for Class A and Class B are the same.  Soon I realized most of my students did not want to be there or have any interest in the topics covered at all.  Most of the time they didn't even know what I was saying anyway since their English was so poor.  I honestly was trying my best and trying different ways to teach them, but nothing worked out and I got tired of their bullshit.  None of them did the homework, they all complained about everything, and I was just annoyed by their lack of effort to even fake things at that point, so I gave up.  I came to class taught them and just bullshitted 2 hours until class was over.  At this time I started working at a place called NDI.  Things were going well at NDI for the most part.  I was making more money than I was teaching at my college because I was working more hours.  Then I was asked to teach at a different NDI on the other side of the city, as a favor to the woman that found the job for me I accepted.  I taught there for five hours on a Saturday because that's what I was told they needed me to do.   Two weeks goes by and its pay day!! Yippee!!!  NDI refuses to pay me for working those five hours.  The office would not sign the form relinquishing the payment to me because they said I worked more hours than their full-time employees.  I told the woman that made me work there and she told me to come to the HQ and argue and demand my money. So I did and finally got paid about 1 month AFTER I was supposed to get paid.  I want go into full details here but just know I can't work at NDI anymore.

There are a lot of things I have left out but I will live that for tomorrow.....right now, I really feel crushed and can't type anymore....(this feeling has nothing to do with whats in this article, i'll explain in next article

Mermail Win YCS....again

So if you haven't been sleeping under a rock you know that right now the current top deck is Mermail.  Mono Mermail, Merlantean whatever you want to call it.  It has won back to back YCSs now and has definitely put itself at the top of the food chain with Fire Fist following close behind, but soon that all changes.  With the impeding release of Hidden Arsenal 7 the meta will once again get a face lift.  The new Evilswarms will be coming out and you can't forget that gadgets will be getting the new Tin Goldfish card to add to their arsenal as well.  So once again you are going to be seeing people drop Rescue Rabbit and xyz but now its going to be into cards like Evilswarm Ophion instead of Dolkka. The meta will change as Merlantean will be phased out and the deck will have to adapt to the new threat.

Alright now I just want to touch on the idea of Sealed play for a second.  For those that don't know what happened at YCS San Diego, Day 1 was Sealed.  Everyone showed up, they were given paper, pen, and packs.  The opened the 10 packs, wrote down on the paper what was in them and then returned the packs back to the TO to redistribute.  This was done so that people couldn't just say "OH MY GOD I PULLED TRIP TOUR GUIDE SO GREAT!!!!"  Cause if they wanted to put three tour guide in that means they would lose them.  On the other hand the opposite might have occurred. "Oh shit I pulled star foil Tour Guide!!! Let me just slide that under the table real quick and replace it with some lower value card"  I don't know if they had any protection against such things happening but that's whatever I guess.  In sealed play (using Battle Packs) I would not want a Tour Guide anyway unless I pulled some rank 3 xyz monsters that are going to help.  Most people built a 30 card deck with the highest attack monsters they pulled and threw in a few high defense monsters just for good measure.  Which is what you should do, but now let me just talk about how I really feel about Sealed play.........

I FUCKING HATE IT

Yu-Gi-Oh should never have sealed play.  I hate the entire concept of it.  Who in the fuck wants to drive/fly/walk miles and miles and miles to show up and not even know what they are going to be able to play until they get there.  This shit might work for Magic, but its not for YuGiOh.  This game should only be constructed.  I know I personally would never travel even one hour just to base my entire tournament performance on whether or not I got enough 1900 attack monsters or 2000 defense monsters.  That's just stupid.  Sealed play seems like a huge waste of time to me.  Your entire tournament experience depends on what you get from random packs.  I don't know about you guys, but I don't even buy packs let alone am I going to buy 10 packs and pray to god/buddha/ala/tom cruise that I get enough decent cards to make a playable deck.  Just no, fuck that...YuGiOh is luck based enough.  I don't see a reason with adding more dumb luck to this game by making it so you have to open a bunch of pretty shitty packs and make a deck.  It can weed out the bad players from the good players if you think about it in the sense that a good player should be able to win even if the deck is unfamiliar, but think about it like this, it doesn't matter how great you are at the game if your packs don't even come with one monster with 1900 ATK or 2000 DEF you are going to lose.  You are going to get steam rolled by other people that did get them whether they are good or not, because this isn't a combo-based format its a "OH big attack let me put him in here format!"  Also what if you don't get any monster destruction.  No fissures, no anything......You get a bunch of worthless spells.  I'm sorry but Yu Gi Oh is lucky enough without adding in these stupid pack opening factors.

So in short

FUCK SEALED PLAY ITS STUPID AND A WASTE OF MONEY

If you like sealed play...FUCK YOU!!!!!

Naw I'm just kidding your cool.  I love you.  Enjoy your sealed play...alone....cause nobody likes it.

Swap Frog

This is my first true article for the Angry Ginger Blog. I want to take this time to say, this is no longer a Yu-Gi-Oh only blog. I am going to also use this blog to talk about various opinions and just thoughts that come through my head during the day here in China.
If you have seen my Facebook page you know that I am a lover of all things Swap Frog. I have loved this card since it was first introduced a few years back. Lets start with taking a look at what Swap Frog is and what it does:

“You can discard 1 WATER monster to Special Summon this card from your hand. When this card is Summoned, you can select and send 1 Level 2 or lower Aqua-Type WATER monster from your Deck or your side of the field to the Graveyard. Once per turn, you can return 1 monster you control to your hand to Normal Summon 1 "Frog" monster, except "Swap Frog" or "Frog the Jam", in addition to your Normal Summon or Set this turn.”

Alright so lets take a look at the ways to Summon Swap Frog. You can normal summon it and then use its effect to send 1 Level 2 or lower Aqua-Type water monster to the graveyard or you can Special Summon him by discarding 1 water monster to the graveyard. So there are two ways to summon him, this allows for a few interesting plays. I will discuss these plays in a minute lets take a look at the rest of his effects first. “Once per turn, you can return 1 monster you control to your hand to Normal Summon 1 “Frog” monster, except for Swap and Frog the Jam, in addition to your normal summon or set.” Alright so he has a built in effect that allows you to normal summon a second time during your turn as long as its a Frog monster. This effect is usually used every single turn you summon a Swap Frog. The extra Normal summon is not important, it is just an added bonus. I can not remember the last time I used his extra Normal summon. The big thing here is the cost!! Returning 1 monster you control... You can return Swap Frog to use him again!
So let's say we are playing Slushy Frog. We can discard Slushy to Special Summon Swap Frog, then use Swap Frog's effect to send a second Slushy to the graveyard. Now just from this place you already have two Slushy in the graveyard waiting to use their awesome effect to bring out a Poseidra or other Sea-Serpant you may be running. Then you can pay the cost of his effect to return Swap Frog to the hand. Then either Special Summon OR Normal Summon the Swap Frog to send the final Slushy to the graveyard! Now just from two summons you have your graveyard loaded up with Slushy and ready to go. Alright lets think about this from a different approach.
You are running Frog Monarch. The turn before you dropped a Caius the Shadow Monarch on your opponent. Your hand consists of Swap Frog, Dupe Frog, Mystical Space Typhoon. Your opponent T-Set (set 1 monster 1 spell/trap) and ended his turn. You use the Mystical Space Typhoon, the discard Dupe Frog to Special Summon Swap Frog. With Swap Frogs effect you are now free to send an Aqua to the graveyard, lets say you already have Ronintoadin in the Graveyard so you opt to send a Treeborn Frog to the grave for later use. Now you can return Caius to your hand for Swap Frogs effect. Banish your Dupe Frog for Ronintoadin and then Tribute the toad to resummon Caius to banish their only monster on the field. So in these examples you are using Swap Frog's ability to not only spam himself, but also spam other bigger monsters if need be.
The Swap Frog engine is pretty versatile in that it can fit in most tribute heavy decks and full the tribute summons. Now lets look further at how Swap Frog works. Here are the rulings posted on the yugioh wikia about Swap Frog:
  • You can Normal Summon this monster. (This is pretty obvious and is what makes him so versatile when dumping frogs into the graveyard.
  • Discarding 1 WATER monster is a cost. (So you have to discard the monster to gain the SS)
  • Sending a monster from your Deck to the Graveyard does not target. (So you don't have to worry about misplaying by saying one monster and then while flipping through the deck you change your mind)
  • Returning a monster you control to your hand is a cost. (This is a big one. This allows you to re-use Swap if the opponent Effect Veiler'd him or just return Swap if they flip up a Skill Drain)
  • If you activate the effect of more than 1 “Swap Frog”, you can only Normal Summon 1 time in addition to your Normal Summon or set. (His effect is not accumulative, not that it really matters)
  • If the effect of “Swap Frog” activates and is resolved, and later during the turn “Skill Drain” is activated, you can still Normal Summon a “Frog” monster in addition to your Normal Summon or Set. (This just feels kind of obvious to me....)
  • You do not Normal Summon at the resolution of “Swap Frog's” effect. It allows you to Normal Summon a “Frog” monster at any time you would be able to Normal Summon a monster during that turn. (Again this seems pretty obvious, you don't have to use his effect at all if you don't want to)

Alright so those are the basic rulings for Swap Frog. Some are helpful in clarifying how his effects work and some are just things you'd think people would understand based on how the game works, but none the less they are there and I'm sure they have helped someone in the past. In my examples I have talked about the Swap Frog Engine. I will discuss this in my second article and show you why these little Level 2 monsters are worth sending to the graveyard. Besides the obvious one of giving you tribute fodder for Monarchs.
