Tournament Report September 14th Plant Rulers

So I ran pretty much the same deck I ran last time except I put in Corsesca and Lonefire Blossom.

Round 1 vs Chaos Dragon Game 1 Free Game 2 Free

 Round 2 vs Gladiator Beast
Game 1 I use all three of my Maxx Cs on him this game....
Game 2 I didn't really draw into my side deck cards. I think I drew like one of my MSTs and that's it. I remember doing a play with dracossack and blackrose dragon after he fiendish chained my BRD.

 Round 3 vs Dragon Rulers
Game 1 LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF TOKENS, he gets out a shooting star dragon but can't hit me, I take the shooting star dragon, I cant hit him, we play for a really long time with tokens and ramming and can't really do damage. Time is called.....I win in time
Game 2 He goes first, I make a colossal fighter and swing for 2800. He makes a big eye and takes it and swings for 2800. I make a big eye to try and take his big eye to take colossal. He uses veiler. He wins.
Game 3 He opens with a set monster. I open with a blaster and a gaia with two dandylion tokens. I run over his guard for 600 with gaia attack for 2800 directly. He is able to make a play but thanks to the two tokens he wasn't able to kill me. I win in time. We were more than 40 minutes over time because you can't draw at locals

 Round 4 vs Mecha Rulers
Game 1 We go back and forth I take game with thanks to the overwhelming power that dragons can create. Game 2 He opened double electric virus ftw
Game 3 We played back and forth for a little bit. Eventually time is called.....I'm able to make a big play and hit him down to like 700. Then on his turn I immediately flipped Vanity's Emptiness. He sets a monster, my blaster bounces to my hand. I draw its another emptiness and its my last turn in time. So I set effect veiler set my other emptiness. He summons some level 4 phantom beast thing flips his facedown its another phantom beast, he runs over veiler killing it and the emptiness, he attacks with the other one and i flip the second emptiness, he wasnt able to go into gagaga cowboy, but even if he could have I dont think it would have mattered......

 Round 5 vs Plant Rulers
Alright so Chris and me are both undefeated and guaranteed top 8 so we just play three games no side decking just for the hell of it. I honestly didn't care about finishing undefeated.
Game 1 I got all out with return on like turn 2 cause well who the fuck cares....I win this game on turn 4 I think.
Game 2 He otks me with red-eyes blaster tempest
Game 3 He otks me again after flipping trap stun to stop my mirror force

Top 8 is annouced
Top 8 vs Gladiator Beast Sorry Jesse :(
Game 1 I win this game pretty easily
Game 2 I make a huge misplay because I'm stupid and didn't think about what deck he was playing...... Game 3 I don't make the same mistake twice kill his fossil dyna with blaster. Make a dracossack to pop his facedown monster just in case its another fossil dyna, then flip return for game

 Top 4--We split

Deck list is on my facebook page

Damage Step, Substeps, and Calculation Explained

Alright, so with the resurgence of popularity in Blackwings I think its time I broke down the damage step and the substeps so people can gain a greater understanding of what exactly happens when they are declaring an attack and when they should or shouldn't use a certain card to try and trample over their opponents monster.  There are many articles out there that are very complicated when it comes to explaining things so I want to try and make this as clear as possible.  Since this is an adult oriented blog, this allows me use certain words to better increase your understanding of when you can and can't do things.

When attacking there are 7 substeps that take place before its all said and done.  Most people just think there are 3 or maybe even just 2, but for those that don't know there are 7!! 7!!!!! Okay now that we got that out of the way.....On to explaining the seven substeps and what you can and can't do during them.

Attack Decleration
Mirror Force, Sakuretsu, etc is activated right now.

Before Entering Damage Step
Cards that don't need to be activated in response to an attack maybe activated right now, Waboku, etc as long as it is a spell speed 2.  You can have multiple chains in this step before both players agree to move on to the Damage Step.

Substep 1
This is the start of the Damage Step.  First thing that happens are Continuous Effects.  The effects of cards like Steamroid and Jain, Lightsworn Paladin happen right now!  So the boosting of their attacks is the first thing to happen.  You got it???  THE VERY FIRST THING !!!  Next in substep two we have Trigger Effects, such as Neo-Spacian Grand Mole, Mystic Swordsman LV2, etc.   During this step you may also activate spell speed two cards that increase or decrease a monsters attack.

Substep 2
Flipping monsters face-up.  If the monster is face-down now it will be flipped face-up.  FLIP EFFECTS DO NOT FUCKING ACTIVATE IN THIS STEP!!!!!  TRIGGER EFFECTS THAT ACTIVATE WHEN FLIPPED FACE-UP DO NOT ACTIVATE AT THIS TIME!!! (Tsukuyomi)  Now that the monster is face up if it has a Continuous Effect it is now applied.  So if they are attacking a face down Jinzo, traps can no longer be used after this part of Substep 2 because he is now face-up and negating cards.  During this step you may also activate spell speed two cards that increase or decrease a monsters attack

Substep 3
This is the step right before we actually enter damage calculation.  Now cards such as Ehren, Lightsworn Monk's effects activate.  Other notable cards like this are Drillroid and Ninja Grand Master Sasuke.  Now we have cards that have effects that activate when they are attacked and flipped face up, this is the substep these cards actually activate in.  Cards like Ancient Lamp and Blast Sphere.  Normally such cards say "without applying Damage Calculation".  A classic card Reflect Bounder also gains his effect during this substep.  During this step you may also activate spell speed two cards that increase or decrease a monsters attack.  Now there is one thing I should note about substep 3.  YOU ARE ALLOWED MULTIPLE CHAINS IN THIS STEP FOR ATTACK INCREASING AND DECREASING CARDS!!  So if you have Shrink set and Rush Recklessly and your opponent uses Solemn Judgment to negate Shrink.  You are now free to start a NEW chain to activate the Rush Recklessly.

Substep 4
We are now entering damage calculation.  Now we can activate cards that say "during damage calculation".  There is only one Chain allowed during this step.  Before this chain starts any Continuous Effects that are specific to damage calculation are applied! YOU HEAR ME FUCKERS!! BEFORE STARTING THE CHAIN!!!!  Substep 4 is usually the most optimal step to use Honest who can be activated during any of these steps, but there is no real reason to activate Honest prior to substep 4.  The only effects that can be used during this one chain are cards that say "during damage calculation" and effects that negate them, like Counter Traps and Light and Darkness Dragon.  EFFECTS THAT INCREASE OR DECREASE A MONSTERS ATTACK CAN NOT BE USED AT THIS TIME!!! YOU MISSED THE TIMING FOR SHRINK IF YOU ARE TRYING TO DO IT RIGHT NOW!!!!

Let me give you an example of how substep 4 works.
I have a Thunder King Rai-Oh.  I attack your Sabersaurus.  I ask do you have any responses during substeps 1-3.  You reply no.  I say alright.  Substep 4 aka Damage Calculation I will use my Honest.  You flip Shrink in attempt to chain to Honest.  I laugh at you for being bad at this game cause you just missed your chance to use the Shrink.

Now Honest vs Honest!!!!!
Same scenario except now you have Thunder King too.  I attack.  I ask for a response you do nothing.  I declare substep 4 aka Damage Calculation and use my Honest.  You decide to chain your Honest to my Honest.  Well now when the chain resolves my Honest will be chain link 1 and resolve after yours making my monster still 1900 more than your monster and you wasted your Honest.

Substep 5
We are now done with damage calculation.  Now we can use cards like Don Zaloog, and Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer if they inflicted damage.  There are a couple of other things that can happen here but are card specific and I don't want to get into that cause they are bad cards....

Substep 6
Now your flip effect will resolve!!!! REJOICE YOU CAN RYKO!!!!  This is also the step when cards like Snowman Eater activate their effects.  D.D. Warrior Lady and D. D. Assailant activate now.

Substep 7  WOO LAST ONE!!!
You are now entering the end of the damage step and cards like Mystic Tomato and shit attempt to activate now, as long as they aren't banished of course.   This is also the time to use Hydrogeddon and Blue Thunder effects to gain your pluses.  Fulhelmknights destroying a defense position monster effect activates during this step as well.  This is also when you get The Six Samurai Zanji's effect and Chainsaw Insect and other cards that activate in this manner.

AND NOW YOU ARE DONE WITH THE ATTACK!

So you are probably wondering? Well when the fuck should I use Kalut ???  During substep 4 because it can be used during damage calculation!  So when the fuck can I forbidden lance????  Substep 3 and sooner.  In other words if you know your opponent has Kalut and you need to make their monster small enough so that Kalut won't matter, you better do it before substep 4 aka Damage Calculation

Welcome to the crazy world of the damage step substeps.  If you have any questions feel free to ask, I'd rather you didn't because I'm lazy and fuck you....Naw I'm just kidding......Love you guys <3

Statesboro Local Tournament Report 8/31 - September 2013 Format

So I initially wanted to run Sabers at this, but then I figured I'd just run Dragon Plants as it is a stronger deck and has a better comeback factor.  I came to this conclusion after a bunch of testing on Dueling Network.  Sabers just weren't able to keep up with Agents, Infernity, Blackwing, etc.... So I ran a janky version of Plant Rulers.  I will post the list after the report.

Round 1  vs Chaos Dragons
Game 1
I won this game pretty easily after taking his Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon...
Game 2
This game was all mine after his first turn.  For some reason he decided it would be a good idea to turn 1 set his Electric Virus =/  I just.....no comment......I won....

Round 2 vs Lightsworn
Game 1
He drops a tragoedia on my first attack.  I saw nothing else.  I killed him before he could do anything else.
Game 2
I finally see that he is playing Lightsworn.  He uses recharge, hits crap.  He sets a monster.  I go for big field, dracossack his facedown Ryko swing for a bit then pass.  He drops a Gorz on me but it didn't help much.  I just took it with Big Eye and used it to make a Master of Blades.....

Round 3 vs Destiny Zombie
Game 1
I open with 3 D.D.R........yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Game 2
I open with two shadow imprisoning mirrors and a hand full of dragons to his Mind Drain.  I lost

Round 4 vs X-Sabers
Game 1
He wipe the floor with me thanks to gottoms' e-cal and faultroll plays.
Game 2
I take this game pretty convincingly thanks to Star Eater.
Game 3
Star Eater again shows his head but this time he was able to drop Catastor to kill it.  I make a big Dracossack play to clear his field thanks to Mecha Phantombeast Tetherwolfs effect. Time is then called.  He has one in hand card and sits there for about 5 minutes thinking.  I ask him if there is anything he can do cause honestly I was tired of waiting, he only had 1 in hand card and no field, wasting time.  He finally summons the damn thing and it was Fulhelm knight which he kills my token brings back Fulhelm knight.  I get through that.  He makes a Bogart play with Ragigura or something.  I just know it was the last turn of the game and he had Bogart in Atk mode, Ragigura in def mode, and a dark soul.  I went into Gaia for the trample, then dropped a few other big ass monsters and swung for game cause fuck winning by time.

Round 5 vs Infernity
Game 1
I completely don't remember this game but I had final life points me at 5200 and him at 2800, then I lost.....
Game 2
I remember like using blaster to kill his Imperial Iron Wall then killing him with Star Eater attacks.  I do remember that in this game I used Return from the Different Dimension and he Bottomless'd I wanted to cry but I got my dragon searches....
Game 3
I open up with 4 Dragons and a D.D.R in my hand so I drop a first turn Dracossack.  He tried to Imperial Iron Wall me on my turn I used Trap Stun....  He couldn't get around my plays.  He didn't even touch me this game.  I do remember he used Archfiend to search Infernity Break or whatever that trap is called, but he didn't have any Infernity in the graveyard to activate it.  So I just went into a Stardust Dragon and then started killing his field.  He conceded.....

Top 8 is announced I was 5th place or something I don't know.....My friends from High School had arrived to my college town so at this point I was ready to go and started shouting to split top 8.  After I did the math everyone was okay with splitting top 8 giving everyone about $20 store credit.  So I leave and then we spend the next three hours trying to figure out what to eat until we finally go to Chilis and then mine was free.   Good day yo.....

Side deck is irrelevant cause its full of stuff for local meta, but Maxx "C" is in the side deck, its not needed at my locals to be main decked.

Any questions let me know.

My next article will be posted on Wed. and I will be teaching you all the sub-steps in the damage step since cards like Kalut, Bujin, Honest are seeing more play now......
